History of Music Magazine
Music magazines were extremely prolific int he UK. NME (New Musical Express) have been leading the sales ever since it's first issue, which was in the year 1952. They have had a longstanding rivalry with Melody Maker. Melody Maker are an even older music magazine publication which have existed since the year 1926. However, by 2001, the falling circulation and the rise in internet music sites caused the Melody Maker to be absorbed into it's rival and cease publishing. There are several other British magazines that have fell between 1990 and 2000, such as Select an Sounds. The current UK music magazine sinclude Q, Kerrang! and Mojo. These 3 are all published by EMAP. The magazines that focus on pop rather than rock, and are aimed a a younger market include Smash Hits and BBC's Top of the Pops. The Top of the Pops magazine outlived the television show that it was based on.
The longest running music magazine from the UK is BMG. This magazine was founded in the year 1903 by Clifford Essex. BMG stands for Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar. This is the oldest fretted instrument focused publication. This magazine actively promotes acoustic instruments of all different kinds.
In the US, major music magazines include Rolling Stone and Spin. The Rolling Stone was founded in the year 1967, whereas Spin was founded in 1985. In 2004, Clash magazine was voted as the music magazine of the year in 2004 and is the second largest UK online presence. Also, Clash was awarded the magazine of the year award at the PPA Scotland Awards
An example of Nostaglia magazine is Keep Rokin. This is a 1950s and 60's nostalgia magazine. The premier issue was released in January 2009. This magazine features a mixture of current events which surround the time period, such as concerts, car shows etc. It also contains stories with original photos from the 1950s and 1960s. Also, it contains reader-written articles about their experiences growing up in that time period.
Conventions of Music Magazine Advertisements
Above is an image of a table that I used to analyse the different things that I can see on different music magazine advertisements. I stated the artist name, the album title, any images that were on the advertisement and any other things that may be seen on there, just by looking at the advertisement. The most common thing you see on music advertisements is an image of the artist, I have picked this out by looking at each of the advertisements that I analysed and seeing an image of the artist there. Out of the 9 advertisements that I looked at, 6 had an image of the artist on. The artists I looked at were Lau, Fay Hield and the Hurricane Party, Mid which Assembly, Hurry for the Riff Raff, Blair Dunlop, Sandi Thom, Terry Emm, Awna Teixeira and James Clay.Examples of music magazines
NME Magazine
NME stands for New Musical Express. They specialise in the indie and rock genres. They have been publishing since the year of 1952. They believe that their target audience varies between the ages of 16-19. This is because in the 21st century, NME were seen as the most popular magazine for teenagers.

Codes and Conventions
So that my music magazine advertisement looks realistic and professional, I have been looking at music magazines so I can try to spot codes and conventions
My Practice Magazine Advertisement
Firstly, I looked for an image online and imported it into photoshop. When doing my actual music magazine advertisement, I will need to use my own images and not any others but seeing as this is a practice, it doesn't really matter. As you can see above, in includes the album name, the artist's name and an image of the artist. These are all commonly found on a music magazine advertisement.
Also, what is usually found on a music magazine advertisement is text saying that the album includes singles that have been released or may have been heard of. I have included this on my practice music magazine advertisement.
In the top right corner, I have now added an image of the Universal Records logo. I have added this as it is commonly found on music magazine advertisements.
I have now added Tour Dates on to my music magazine advertisements. This would add potential income as people could then look for tickets as they can see the date. This is commonly found on music advertisements, so I have included it in my practice.
I have put text saying "Available now on ITunes". This is advertising the album more and is commonly used on music magazine advertisements, so I have included it on my practice.
In the bottom left, I have added a QR code and then text saying "Scan for universal Records' Website". This is commonly found on music magazine advertisements, so I have added it on my practice.
So above is my finished practice magazine advertisement. It contains many codes and conventions which are found in common music magazine advertisements and I believe it very strongly advertises my artist and the album.
Above is the image that I have decided to use on my music magazine advertisement. It is a picture of my artist, whom is in all three of my tasks.
I have now added the artist name and the album title. This is commonly found on music magazine advertisements, and I believe that it is needed so I included it. I then put a picture of some leaves in behind the text, as I believe that it would look good. I used a fade in effect for the leaves to fade in to the image, which I believe looks good. I chose to use leaves because he is surrounded by nature in my other three tasks, so I decided that I would keep this going in my music magazine advertisement.
I have now put text reading "Available now on ITunes". I decided to put this in because as it is an advertisement, I thought it would be suiting to ensure that the audience knows that it is available, and where they can purchase from.
I have now added the tour dates down the left of the screen. I also did this due to the fact it is an advertisement, so I thought that I would advertise the artist's UK tour with the dates and venues. This is usually something found on music magazine advertisements, so I thought that I would also follow the codes and conventions.
Above is my finished music magazine advertisement.
